Why You Should Call The Pros About Bed Bugs In Virginia Beach

June 10, 2021 - Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are some of the hardest pests to eliminate. These flat, oval bugs are brownish and about the size of an apple seed when fully grown. When they have fed, they become rounded and reddish-brown. The nymphs are translucent or yellowish-white and are difficult to see unless they have recently fed. The eggs are small and almost invisible.

DIY Bed Bug Removal

Bed bugs can be quite a problem. Worse, if you don't remove every last bed bug, they will repopulate leaving you right back where you started. Even the most diligent person will struggle to get rid of them all. If you discover bed bugs in your Virginia Beach home,  the best thing to do is call a professional bed bug control company, but there are a few things you can try on your own.

First, you need to locate all the bed bug hot spots. Typically, bed bugs stay near where people sleep. However, they will infest furniture if someone sleeps on it or stays on it for long periods of time. Typically, this is a sofa or reclining chair.

Do not throw out your mattress and box springs or your sofa and chair. It won't help, and it gets expensive. A decent mattress and bedsprings cost around $359 for a full to $2,899 and up for a king. Sofas are also not cheap, at $299.99 and up. Recliners can start at $599. Don't waste your money throwing items out. This will not eradicate a bed bug infestation.

Create A Safe Place To Sleep

  • You need a safe place to sleep where the bed bugs cannot get you.
  • Strip your box springs and mattress.
  • Double bag your linens so you do not trail bed bugs all the way to your washer.
  • Dump your linens in the washer and wash on hot.
  • Discard the inner bag you carried the linens in at once, as it could have bed bugs in it.
  • Dry your linens for at least 30 minutes on high heat.

Treat Your Bed

Once you have done that, it is time to treat your bed. Purchase a mattress encasing bag and one for the box spring. Big stores that sell mattresses carry them for about $11 a bag. Before you put the mattress and box springs in bags, vacuum them thoroughly to remove as many bed bugs as possible. As soon as you finish vacuuming, take the vacuum outside and remove the bag, then place it in the trash can. Vacuum the bed frame, headboard, etc. Finally, get a set of bed bug blocker traps, at about $12 per set. Make sure the bed does not touch the floor, wall, or other furniture. You can now put the washed linens back on the bed.

Treating The Rest Of The Home

Here comes the hard part. Move everything to one side of the room. Vacuum everything in the empty side of the room that can harbor a bed bug. This means under baseboards, carpets, screw holes, around windows, outlets, blinds, and any other place you can find.

Take each piece of furniture and empty it. Place the items in clear bags, double bagging everything that can go in the washer separately from things like radios and toys that cannot. Once these things are bagged, treat every part of the furniture item. Take apart the furniture, remove the cushions, and vacuum every bit of each piece. Repeat until the clean side has all the furniture on it. Then vacuum the empty half of the room. You will need to do this for each room with bed bugs.

Wash all the clothes and other washable items in hot water for at least 30 minutes or put in a hot drier for at least 30 minutes. Don’t overload the washer or drier. Every piece of clothing, etc. must be hot for at least 30 minutes before use.

Stuff that you can’t wash, such as radios, books, etc. should be set out in the direct sun for 8-10 hours. You can put seven pounds of stuff in a clear bag on a 95F day for 8-10 hours and it will get hot enough to kill the bedbugs, including the eggs. Alternatively, you can put the stuff in a deep freeze (0F) for 8-10 hours to kill the bedbugs and eggs. Some toys that would melt or break can be cleaned in hot soapy water or alcohol to kill the bed bugs. You can also just leave the stuff in double bags for around 5 months and allow the bed bugs to starve.
