Bed Bugs

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs have six legs, two antennae, and oval-shaped bodies. Due to their nocturnal natures, you will likely not spot them during daylight hours. Bed bugs are parasitical household insects that have been preying on human beings and their loved ones for over 3,300 years. These pests appear to have the same look and size as an apple seed, and they usually measure in at ¼ an inch at most. The color of a bed bug will change according to its age and circumstances. Nymph bed bugs are see-through and almost entirely devoid of color. Bed bugs who have not fed appear to be a rich brown color, while insects who have or are currently feeding take on a more reddish color pattern.

Are bed bugs dangerous?

Bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases at this time, but they are capable of creating other serious health issues for victims. Bites caused by bed bug populations appear in straight lines or zig-zagging patterns across the body. Secondary infections from scratching or bleeding are common. Bed bugs may also cause significant restlessness at night and influence the development of insomnia in victims. Finally, bed bugs may produce anemia in people that have had severe infestations for long enough periods of time.

Why do I have a bed bug problem?

Bed bugs are known as ‘hitchhiking’ insects and are not particular about the homes they choose to infest. Contrary to popular belief, these creatures are not necessarily attracted to dirty or unkempt homes. They only need access to a single person or family member to begin their infestation.

The purchase of second-hand appliances or furniture is well known for being one of the more obvious ways of getting an infestation. Couches, armchairs, and even toasters can maintain large bed bug populations.

Travel is another way of introducing bed bugs into the home. High population areas such as train depots, bus stations, and airport terminals are known for sustaining a large number of bed bugs looking for easier access to people and pets.

Where will I find bed bugs?

Bed bugs often choose to infest beds, pillows, mattresses, couches, and other forms of upholstery. However, there are many other places in your home where these pests can hide.

Certain electronics, such as washing machines and dryers, can support large colonies of bed bugs at a time. Electrical outlets and wall plugs may also provide adequate shelter to pests and support their feeding habits.

Some locations offer higher concentrations of bed bugs than others. High-volume resorts, hotel rooms, universities, and college dorms are consistent breakout points for infestations.
